About The Ben Buckler

Most of us have a bucket list. A few wild ideas we hope to bring to life one day.

Just after my 50th birthday, I started thinking about the things I wanted to do before I turned 60. Some were ridiculous, some were fun, and making my own whisky felt like a pretty good blend of both.

I just wanted to make 60 bottles of whisky for 60 friends for my 60th birthday. It was only ever meant to be a little bit of fun for my mates, but we accidentally created one of Australia’s favourite new whiskies.

After more than 40 years in television, I’ve been lucky enough to work on some incredible projects. But bringing The Ben Buckler to life is right up there with the best of them.

There’s a rock I used to sit on for hours and watch the waves roll in. It’s where I would solve all the problems of the world and come up with crazy ideas.

This whisky is one of those crazy ideas.

It all began at Ben Buckler, the northern point of Bondi Beach. It’s where I grew up.

There are only three streets on the point, and I’ve lived on all of them. I learned to swim in the baby pool, surfed just off the rocks, delivered newspapers around the neighbourhood, and had my first apartment with Sylvie there. Ben Buckler was my world. So when it came time to name the whisky, there was only one choice.

The Ben Buckler is a nod to that place, those memories and the kind of Australian spirit I grew up around: relaxed, generous, a little cheeky and always better with good people.

Back in 2020, I visited Corowa Distilling Co with a simple idea: to create a special whisky for my family and friends. Working closely with head distiller Beau Schilg, we developed a signature flavour that turned out far better than any of us expected. The result was an award-winning Australian single malt whisky, crafted with ex-tawny port and bourbon barrels for approachable sweetness, smooth depth and savoury character.

Premium, but not precious. Full of character, and made to be shared.

What started as a bit of fun has gone on to win 4 awards internationally. For a whisky that began as 60 bottles for 60 mates, that still blows my mind.

Thanks for being part of the journey."
